The Glass Temple (Kannadi Kshethram)

The Glass Temple (Kannadi Kshethram), Kottamunda, Kalpetta, Wayanad, Kerala

The Glass Temple of ‘Kannadi’ temple is a Jain temple located at Kottamunda, 20 kilometers from Kelpetta, the headquarters of Wayanad district in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Parswanatha Swamy, the third ‘thirthankara’ (like Mohammed in Eslam, a Prophet) in the Jain belief system. The name derived from the unusual architecture of the temple. The inner walls of the temple are adorned with mirrors. The mirrors inside the temple walls reflect thousands of beautiful image orientations of the icon in the temple sanctum sanctorum. This is the main attraction related to this temple. The actual date of the temple construction is unknown. The popular belief is that the temple had been constructed 200 years ago after the flight of Jains to the Malabar region. Close to the temple, one can see rock cut caves used by the Jain monks in a hill. The Jains have a secular belief system, so the temple permits everyone. The temple can be visited at any time, any day. But prior permission needed from the Archeological Survey of India because the temple and the surrounding region are declared as protected region by Kerala Government. The temple is located 20 kilometers from Kalpetta. It is better you reach Kalpetta by road and hire a jeep or taxi to reach the destination. The district Wayanad is not connected by rail. The nearest railway station and airport is Kozhikode, located 74 kilometers away.
